Esther Mahlangu is a South African visual artist whose work extends Ndebele geometric painting into contemporary art, public projects and international collaborations. She received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2006. [1][3]

Biography

Mahlangu was born on 11 November 1935 near Middelburg in Mpumalanga. Her official biography records that she began learning Ndebele mural painting at the age of ten under the guidance of her mother and grandmother. [1]

Her practice brought Ndebele-derived geometric designs into galleries and new media while remaining connected to the visual language she learned at home. Her official site records international exhibitions and collaborations, including her 1991 BMW Art Car project. [2]

In 2006 Mahlangu received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for her contribution to indigenous Ndebele art. South African government material also records her work in teaching and passing painting knowledge to younger artists. [3]
