The Entrepreneurs Behind South Africa’s Major Banks
A sourced guide to the founders and company builders behind Capitec, Rand Merchant Bank and FirstRand, and why the difference between a founder and a later builder matters.
Capitec: founding and building were different roles
Capitec Bank was established in 2001. Michiel le Roux served as founding chief executive, while Riaan Stassen became the executive most associated with developing the bank’s early operating model and scaling it after 2004. [1][2]
The distinction is visible in Capitec’s own reporting: Le Roux’s tenure as chief executive ended in 2004, while a later annual report described Stassen as the man who created Capitec Bank as it was then known. [1][2]
RMB: a three-person entrepreneurial origin
Rand Merchant Bank traces its origins to 1977, when Paul Harris, Laurie Dippenaar and GT Ferreira founded a small structuring house with R10,000 in start-up capital. [3]
RMB says the founders’ complementary strengths transformed that initial business into the investment bank that followed. [3]
FirstRand: a later institutional formation
FirstRand was formed later, in 1998. FirstRand’s own chairman’s report describes GT Ferreira and Laurie Dippenaar as founders and Paul Harris as the third member of the founding trio. [4]
The result is a layered corporate history: the entrepreneurial roots date to the 1977 RMB precursor, while the FirstRand group itself dates to 1998. [3][4]
Why the labels matter
South African corporate history often involves acquisitions, mergers and holding-company restructurings. A person may found an earlier business, create a later group, or transform an existing institution without literally founding it. [3][4]
Using the narrower labels makes company histories more useful: Le Roux is Capitec’s founding chief executive; Stassen is a major early builder; Ferreira, Dippenaar and Harris are the entrepreneurial trio behind RMB and FirstRand. [1][2][3][4]
