Whitey Basson led Shoprite from 1979 until 2016. Shoprite’s own history says he took charge when the business was an eight-store chain and, with his management team, built it through organic growth and acquisitions. [1][2]

Biography

Shoprite’s 2004 annual report says the chain was acquired from the Rogut family in 1979 with eight stores in and around Cape Town. Basson became its chief executive from that point. [1]

The expansion strategy included major acquisitions such as Grand Bazaars in 1990, Checkers in 1991 and OK Bazaars in 1997. These transactions materially changed the scale of the group. [3]

When Basson retired, Shoprite described his tenure as lasting 37 years and credited him and the management team with transforming the original small chain. He is therefore a company builder rather than the literal founder of the original Shoprite stores. [2][1]
