Shoprite Holdings

Shoprite is a South African food-retail group whose modern growth story began when an eight-store chain was acquired in 1979. Whitey Basson led the business from that year and built it through organic growth and major acquisitions.

Shoprite is a South African food-retail group. Its present corporate history is usually traced to the 1979 acquisition of an eight-store Western Cape chain rather than to a single clean founder event. Whitey Basson headed the business from that acquisition and became the central builder of the modern group. [1][2]

History

Shoprite’s 2004 annual report says the chain was acquired from the Rogut family in 1979 when it had eight stores in and around Cape Town. The plan from the outset was to expand both organically and through acquisitions. [1]

Under Basson, Shoprite acquired Grand Bazaars in 1990, Checkers in 1991 and the loss-making OK Bazaars business in 1997. Company reporting later described Basson as having transformed the original eight-store chain during a 37-year tenure. [3][2]
