Who Founded Shoprite — and Who Built It?
Shoprite’s modern growth story began with the acquisition of an existing eight-store chain in 1979. Whitey Basson did not create those original stores, but he led the group from 1979 and built it through expansion and acquisitions.
The short answer
Shoprite is not best described as a company founded from scratch by Whitey Basson. Shoprite’s own history says an existing eight-store chain was acquired from the Rogut family in 1979, after which Basson became chief executive and led the business for 37 years. [1][2]
Basson is therefore more accurately described as the central builder of the modern Shoprite group than as the literal founder of the original Shoprite stores. [1][2]
The eight-store starting point
Shoprite’s 2004 annual report says the business consisted of eight stores in and around Cape Town when it was acquired in 1979. The strategy was to grow both organically and through takeovers. [1]
This makes 1979 the key starting date for the modern corporate story even though the acquired stores themselves pre-dated that transaction. [1]
The acquisitions that changed the group
The group acquired Grand Bazaars in 1990 and Checkers in 1991. Shoprite’s 1992 review records the restructuring that brought the food chains together after the Checkers transaction. [3][4]
In 1997 Shoprite acquired OK Bazaars for one rand, reflecting the loss-making condition of that business at the time. The acquisition nevertheless expanded the group’s store base and became part of its long-term growth story. [3]
Basson’s role
When Basson retired in 2016, Shoprite said he had headed the group from 1979 and transformed the original eight-store chain with the support of an experienced management team. [2]
