Rembrandt Group
The South African group founded by Anton Rupert, whose restructurings produced the Remgro and Richemont branches of the Rupert business history.
Published · Last reviewed
Rembrandt Group was the South African business built by Anton Rupert from tobacco manufacturing. It developed overseas interests and diversified into other industries. Remgro is the continuation of its South African investment-company history. [1]
History
Rembrandt incorporated in 1948 and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1956. In 1972 its overseas tobacco interests were consolidated in Rothmans International. That transaction concerned the overseas tobacco interests, rather than a simple renaming of the whole group. [1]
The 1988 creation of Richemont separated international assets from Rembrandt. The two groups later participated in the tobacco combination that led to their BAT investment. Their common history therefore included both separations and shared investments. [2][1]
In September 2000, four South African listed holding companies were consolidated into Remgro and VenFin. Established investments went to Remgro. Telecommunications and technology interests went to VenFin. Remgro and VenFin combined again in 2009. [1]
What does the Rembrandt name mean today?
Rembrandt identifies the historical group in this record. Remgro and Richemont publish separate accounts and operate as separate listed companies. A historical Rembrandt investment should be dated before it is connected to a present company. [1][3]
