Anton Rupert (1916–2006) founded the business that became Rembrandt Group. He also supported education, the arts and conservation. Rembrandt’s development connects his career to the origins of Remgro and Richemont. [4][1][5]

Early life and scientific training

Anton Rupert was born in Graaff-Reinet on 4 October 1916. He studied chemistry at the University of Pretoria and lectured there. His scientific training preceded a business career centred on tobacco and, later, a wider group of investments. [4]

The University of Pretoria remembers Rupert as a student leader, benefactor, honorary professor and chancellor. It awarded him the title Tukkie of the Century in 2001. His gifts included art and the Van Wouw House. [5]

Building Rembrandt

Rupert established Voorbrand, the tobacco business from which Rembrandt developed. Rembrandt incorporated in 1948 and listed in Johannesburg in 1956. Its overseas expansion brought international partners into the business. [1]

The group expanded beyond tobacco into finance, industry and healthcare. Rembrandt became a route through which South African capital reached businesses at home and abroad. Its later corporate separations carried that history into several independently listed companies. [1][2]

Conservation and institutional work

Rupert helped establish Peace Parks Foundation with Nelson Mandela and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands on 1 February 1997. The foundation developed cooperation across national borders to support conservation areas in southern Africa. [6]

The foundation traces an early step to Rupert’s discussions with Mozambique’s President Joaquim Chissano in May 1990. Those discussions concerned links between protected areas across borders. The resulting programme required cooperation between governments, conservation bodies and local communities. [6]

The businesses that followed

Johann Rupert founded Richemont in 1988 from Rembrandt’s international assets. Rembrandt’s South African structure became Remgro and VenFin in 2000. These transactions explain Anton Rupert’s place in the origins of the later groups. [2][1]

Anton Rupert died in Stellenbosch on 18 January 2006. Reinet emerged from the Richemont restructuring in 2008, after his death. His role belongs to the earlier business history, rather than to Reinet’s formation. [4][3]
