Johann Rupert founded Richemont in 1988 through the spin-off of Rembrandt Group’s international assets and became its group chief executive. [1][2]

Biography

Richemont records that Rupert studied economics and company law at Stellenbosch and worked for Chase Manhattan Bank and Lazard Frères in New York before returning to Southern African business. [1]

He founded Richemont in 1988 when the international assets of Rembrandt Group were separated into a new Swiss-based company. The original holdings included interests in Rothmans International and luxury-goods businesses. [2][3]

Rupert became group chief executive at formation and later served in repeated executive and chairman roles. Richemont’s corporate biography identifies him as the founder, while the company history explains the Rembrandt assets from which it was formed. [1][2]
